Many people may not know the difference between proprietary software and open source software. Or they may actually not know what either of those things are. Proprietary software in which the owner purchases the license to use said software but are unable to modify the software in any manner. Think Microsoft Office.
On the other hand, there is open source software in which the user is able to modify the product and then redistribute the new version.
